Definition Of Hand Ball
1. This is any purposeful handling of the ball on the field (with the exception of the goalkeeper within the penalty area). Obviously, this includes moving hands and arms towards the ball in order to interfere with its trajectory. However, referees may also call a hand ball when a player has sufficient time to move their hand or arm out of the way of the ball’s path and failed to do so. In both cases, a hand ball foul is called and a direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team. Any handling of the ball that is clearly unintentional is not penalized and play continues as usual.
Examples Of Hand Ball
1. Johnny didn’t mean to hit the ball with his hand, so the ref didn’t call a hand ball.
