What Is The Definition Of Clout Archery? What Is Clout Archery? Definition & Meaning On SportsLingo

Clout archery is a discipline of archery in which the goal is to score points by hitting the target at a long range. The targets are flags which are also known as the “clout” which are placed at distances up to 180 yards from the archer, and the archer must shoot from a designated shooting line. Points are scored depending on how close to each arrow is to the flag.

Where Do Archers Play Clout Archery?

Clout archery is typically played on a field or in a park. The archer must shoot from a designated shooting line to the long-range targets.

What Countries Play Clout Archery And Who Can Claim It As Their Sport?

The origins of when clout archery started is unclear, as no one country can be said to be the birthplace of clout archery. The game is thought to have originated in England, but it has been played in many different countries around the world.

What Are Two Types Of Clout Archery?

There are two variations of clout archery, including “one way” and two way.”

  • One-way shooting: With a single line and a single set of flags at the opposite end of the range, archers fire their arrows from the line toward flags. Then, without their bows, they walk out to the flags to score.
  • Two-way shooting: Instead of a single line, two-way shooting incorporates single lines established on each end of the field. Archers start shooting from one line, walk without their bows to score, and then turn around to shoot to the opposite set of flags.

How Is Clout Archery Scored?

In clout archery, scoring happens in defined zones, measured at their distance from the flag. An arrow can score points based on the zone it enters. If an arrow lands in the flag pole zone, it is the highest possible scoring arrow. If an arrow is lying on the ground, it will be considered for scoring dependent on where its point is facing.

If needed, a rope or chain is used to sweep around a radius of scoring zones.

There is a specially-designated person who collects arrows from the zones and sorts them on the ground. The archer will call out their scores in a descending pattern.
