In many instances when the team at bat has two outs, a full count and a runner on first base, or any other base if they’re forced to advance on a ball in play, the baserunner may run on the pitch. The reason for this being is because the pitcher is forced to deliver a strike and in essence, gives the baserunner a head start on the base paths with minimal risk of getting out. If the pitcher delivers a ball and walks the batter, the runner was going to advance regardless. If the batter puts the ball in play, then the runner has a head start on the base paths.
Although not as common, the runner may also try to advance when there is one or no outs, but they must be mindful on line drive plays in order to avoid getting doubled up. If the batter hits a line drive, the runner is taught to freeze to see where the ball is hit and must hurry back to their original base if the ball is caught.
