What Is The Definition Of Jab Step In Basketball?

1. A jab step in basketball is a move when the ball handler fakes to one direction as if to drive, only to move in the opposite direction. The ball handler will then either drive the ball or pull up for a shot.

The purpose of a jab step is to give the defender the allusion that you’re going to go past him/her and to create space. It is important for the ball handler to keep the ball secure so that the defender cannot reach for the ball or poke it away.

1. Harden gives his defender a jab step to the right, which gives him just enough space for the step-back jumper.
