What Is The NFC South In Football?
1. The NFC South, the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC), is one of eight divisions in the National Football League (NFL). It originated out of the NFL’s major divisional realignment prior to the 2002 season. It currently represents the states of Louisiana, Georgia, North Carolina and Florida.
History of NFC South
The NFC South didn’t exist until the NFL expanded to 32 teams leading up the 2002 season. It is now one of eight divisions that were created as a result. It is made of one team that had previously been part of the NFC West and NFC Central, and three teams that once belonged to the NFC West.
The NFC South is one of the “newer” divisions in the NFL. The Atlanta Falcons, the oldest team in the division, became a franchise in 1966. The New Orleans Saints started playing as an NFL franchise a year later in 1967. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers played their first NFL season in 1976 and the Carolina Panthers were added as an expansion team in 1995.
As of 2022, no member of the NFC South has an overall winning record during their time as NFL franchises. The Panthers have the highest winning percentage (.486) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the lowest win percentage (.398), which is the lowest in NFL History.
Despite this, every team in the NFC South has made it to the Super Bowl since its creation in 2002. It is only one of two divisions in the NFL to achieve this distinction. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won both of their Super Bowl appearances in 2002 and 2020. The Saints won Super Bowl XLIV in 2009. The Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers both lost their Super Bowl appearances.
Each team in the NFC South has won the division at least three times. The Saints have won it seven times.
