What Is The Definition Of 24-Second Violation?

1. This occurs when the offensive team in basketball either does not attempt a shot or attempts a shot that does not at least hit the rim or goes in the basket within the 24-second shot clock. Only the NBA, WNBA and FIBA basketball game’s shot clock is 24 seconds long.

Examples Of How 24-Second Violation Is Used In Commentary

1. The air ball as the shot clock expires results in a 24-second violation.

2. The defense smothers the offensive player who is unaware of the clock winding down and is then charged with a 24-second violation as the shot clock expires.

SportsLingo Goes The Extra-Inch With The Meaning Of 24-Second Violation

The 24-second shot clock was implemented in the NBA for the first time during the 1954-1955 season. Prior to this season, the NBA’s popularity and attendance was low, mainly due to the pace of the game and teams stalling when they were in possession of the ball. Frankly, teams would just pass the ball amongst themselves in order to run out the clock when they had the lead, therefore making the game uneventful to watch. By implementing the new 24-second shot clock, the pace of the game sped up and forced teams to shoot the ball and score higher points. If the team did not shoot within the 24-second span and at least hit the rim, they then would forfeit possession.
