1. A tomahawk in volleyball is when a defensive player joins their hands, bends their elbows and raises them above their head to make contact with the ball. The tomahawk hit is more of a defensive hit done by a player who has little time to react to a ball coming quickly in their direction.

The motion the player conducts with their arms and hands makes it appear like their are throwing a tomahawk.
